The best day trips from Cartagena

Rosario Islands, Barú, Tierrabomba, the mud volcano and Santa Marta. Which Cartagena day trips are worth the early start and which ones are not.

The best day trip from Cartagena is a private boat through the Rosario Islands. Barú and Playa Blanca come second, Tierrabomba is the easiest half day, and the mud volcano is fun once. Anything that involves more than two hours in a car is better as an overnight.

Rosario Islands, the one to do

An archipelago of 27 islands about an hour out by boat, with the clearest water anywhere near the city. Snorkeling, beach clubs, quiet coves and lunch on a deck over the reef.

Do it privately if the group is more than four. Shared boats run to a fixed schedule and spend more of the day loading people than swimming. Full details in our Rosario Islands guide.

Barú and Playa Blanca

Reachable by road in about an hour or by boat in less. White sand, warm shallow water, and beach clubs that range from excellent to chaotic.

Go early. By 11am the day trippers arrive and the sellers get relentless. A day pass at a good club, or a private villa on the coast, keeps the whole thing calm.

Tierrabomba, the half day

Fifteen minutes by boat. Beach clubs with pools, food and a skyline view. Perfect when you want water but not a whole expedition, or when the group is split between energy levels.

Totumo mud volcano

A 45 minute drive north to a small cone filled with warm grey mud you float in, followed by a rinse in the lagoon. It is silly, memorable and photographs well.

It is not luxurious and it is often crowded. Go early with your own transport, bring a towel you do not care about.

What to skip as a day trip

Santa Marta, Tayrona and Palomino are four to five hours each way. They are worth seeing, just not between breakfast and dinner. Give them two nights or leave them for the next trip.

  • Leave by 8:30am for anything on the water.
  • Sun protection matters more than you think on a boat, reef safe and reapplied.
  • Cash for beach clubs and small vendors, cards are unreliable outside the city.
  • Agree every price before you step on a boat or a chair.

By boat from the Cartagena marina, about 45 to 60 minutes depending on the vessel and the sea. Private boats leave when you want, shared boats run on a fixed schedule.

Is Playa Blanca worth visiting?

Yes if you go early and book a proper beach club. The sand and water are beautiful. By midday it gets crowded and the selling is constant.

Can you do Tayrona as a day trip from Cartagena?

Not comfortably. It is four to five hours each way. Treat it as a two night trip instead.
