Helicopter tours in Medellín: prices, routes and how to book

What you actually see from the air

Medellín sits in a narrow valley with mountains on both sides, so the city reads completely differently from 1,500 feet. You get the whole shape of it at once: the towers of El Poblado, the hillside neighborhoods stacked up the slopes, the river cutting the valley in half and the green ridgelines that pen it all in.

Late afternoon is the flight to book. The light turns warm, the haze drops and the hills go gold about an hour before sunset. Mornings are clearer but flatter to look at.

The routes worth flying

Every operator sells roughly the same three flights, with different names on them.

• ·Valley loop, 20 to 30 minutes. El Poblado, downtown, the river and back. The classic first flight and the easiest to fit into a busy day.
• ·Extended city and mountains, 45 minutes. Adds the eastern ridge, Santa Elena and the reservoirs above the city.
• ·Guatapé flight, 60 to 90 minutes round trip. Out over the hills to El Peñón and the emerald reservoir, either as a flyover or with a landing and a boat waiting for you.
• ·Point to point transfer. Airport, Guatapé, Santa Fe de Antioquia, coffee country or a private finca. No sightseeing loop, just distance erased.

What a helicopter tour in Medellín costs

Helicopters are priced by the hour and by aircraft, not per seat, so the cost splits across everybody on board. A Robinson R44 carries three passengers, a Bell 407 or an EC130 carries five or six.

• ·Short valley flight, 20 to 30 minutes, from around $700 to $1,100 for the aircraft.
• ·Extended 45 minute flight, roughly $1,200 to $1,800.
• ·Guatapé round trip with a landing, from about $2,500 depending on wait time on the ground.
• ·Larger turbine aircraft with five or six seats sit at the top of every range.
• ·Fuel surcharges, airport fees and ground wait time are usually billed on top, so ask for the all in number before you confirm.

Where flights leave from

Almost every tour departs Olaya Herrera, the small airport inside the city, which is ten to twenty minutes from El Poblado depending on traffic. That matters: you are wheels up within minutes of arriving instead of driving out to Rionegro.

Flights can also start or finish at José María Córdova international airport, which is how a lot of clients arrive from Miami or Panama and step straight into a helicopter to Guatapé or a finca.

Safety, operators and what to check

Colombian civil aviation is well regulated and the serious operators in Medellín fly maintained twin and single turbine aircraft with commercial licensed pilots. The gap in quality is between charter companies with their own fleet and brokers reselling whatever is available that day.

• ·Ask which aircraft you are actually flying and how many seats it has.
• ·Confirm the pilot is a commercial charter pilot, not a private owner doing a favor.
• ·Weather cancels flights and no reputable operator argues about it. Ask what happens to your deposit when it does.
• ·Weight and balance is real. Give honest passenger weights when you book so nobody gets bumped on the pad.

Best time of day and time of year

Medellín weather works in halves. Mornings are usually clear, afternoons build cloud and rain, especially April to May and September to November.

The practical answer: book a morning slot in the rainy months and a late afternoon slot in the drier ones. If the flight is the highlight of the trip, book it for your first full day so there is room to move it if the sky closes in.
