Guatapé is the one place in Colombia where you can fly over the water in the morning and be on it by lunch. A tandem paragliding flight runs roughly $70 to $130 per person for 15 to 25 minutes in the air, and jet skis rent from about $60 to $100 for a half hour on the reservoir. Both are two hours from Medellín, both work best before noon, and both fit into the same day as El Peñón without rushing.
Paragliding around Guatapé and Medellín
Tandem paragliding means you fly strapped to a licensed pilot who handles everything. You run three or four steps off a grass slope, the wing lifts and then you are sitting in a harness watching the reservoir open up underneath you.
Most flights in Antioquia launch from the ridges around San Felix north of Medellín, which is the classic valley flight, or from hills near the Guatapé reservoir where the view is water and islands instead of city.

The reservoir is a flooded valley, which means calm fresh water, hundreds of green islands and long quiet arms with nobody in them. That is much better jet ski territory than open sea.
Rentals run from the malecón in Guatapé town and from several docks around the water. You get a life jacket, a quick briefing and a marked area to ride in, with a guide on a second machine if you ask.

Best time of day and best months
Paragliding depends on air, jet skis depend on crowds, and both point at the same answer: go early.
- Paragliding, 9am to noon is the sweet spot. Air is smooth, thermals are working and the afternoon cloud has not arrived.
- Jet skis, before 11am or after 3pm. Midday on the reservoir is loud, busy and full of party boats.
- December to March and July to August are the driest months and the most reliable for flying.
- April to May and September to November bring afternoon storms, so book the morning and keep the afternoon flexible.
- Weekdays over weekends, always. Sunday in Guatapé is a national outing.
Safety, weight limits and what to ask
Tandem paragliding is a licensed activity in Colombia and the reputable schools fly certified wings with insured pilots. Jet skis are looser, so the operator matters more than the machine.
- Ask the paragliding pilot for their license and how many tandem hours they fly. Real ones answer instantly.
- Weight limit is a safety number, not a suggestion. Be honest at booking.
- Wind cancels flights. A pilot who flies anyway is the wrong pilot.
- For jet skis, check the life jacket fits and the machine has a working kill cord before you leave the dock.
- Neither activity suits recent surgery, late pregnancy or serious back problems.
How to fit both into one day from Medellín
Two hours out, two hours back, and everything else in between. The order matters more than the hours.
- 7:00am leave Medellín with a driver.
- 9:00am paragliding while the air is smooth.
- 10:30am El Peñón, up the 740 steps before the buses fill the staircase.
- 12:30pm lunch on the malecón, trout and a cold beer.
- 2:00pm jet skis or a private boat hour on the reservoir.
- 4:00pm head back and beat the return traffic into the city.
What to bring
Short list, and each item saves somebody's day.
- Swimwear under your clothes and a towel in the car.
- Closed shoes for the paragliding launch and the rock staircase.
- Sunscreen. You are at altitude on open water and it burns fast.
- Cash in small bills for deposits, rock entry and dock fees.
- A light rain layer for the afternoon.
- A phone strap or waterproof pouch. The reservoir has eaten a lot of phones.
