What airport pickup in Colombia actually costs, how long the drive really takes, and why booking a private transfer is the easiest upgrade of the whole trip.
Medellín's main airport is about 45 minutes from El Poblado on a good day and closer to 90 in traffic. Cartagena's airport is 15 minutes from the walled city. In both cities a private transfer with a vetted driver removes the queue, the price negotiation and the one situation where visitors most often get taken advantage of.
Medellín has two airports
José María Córdova, code MDE, handles all international flights and sits up on a plateau outside the valley. The drive down into the city is beautiful and takes 45 to 90 minutes depending on the hour.
Olaya Herrera, code EOH, is inside the city and handles small domestic flights only. Ten minutes to Poblado. Check your ticket carefully, people mix these up and lose an hour.
Cartagena is easy, then it is not
Rafael Núñez is practically in town. Fifteen minutes to the walled city, ten to Bocagrande.
The catch is the arrivals hall, which is small, hot and crowded with drivers offering rides. If you are heading to Barú instead of the city, it is closer to 90 minutes and worth having a proper vehicle for.
What a transfer should include
Not all pickups are the same service. Here is what we consider standard.

- Driver waiting inside arrivals with a name board, not calling you from a parking lot.
- Bilingual driver with a working phone and a way to reach the concierge on duty.

- One fixed price agreed in advance, no meter, no surge, no cash surprise.
Cost and when it makes sense
A private SUV transfer costs a fraction of what people expect and a modest premium over an app. For a solo traveler on a midday arrival, an app is fine. For a late night arrival, a group with luggage, a family, or anyone carrying anything valuable, book the car.

The mistake to avoid
Never accept a ride from someone who approaches you inside the terminal. Legitimate drivers wait with a name board and know your booking reference. This is the single most common way visitors get overcharged or worse in either city.
