What does a private driver cost in Medellín?

Real prices for private drivers and luxury transportation in Medellín, what is included in a day rate, what triggers extra charges, and how to tell a fair quote from a bad one.

A private driver with an executive SUV in Medellín starts at about $220 for a ten hour day, including fuel, tolls, insurance and the driver's time. Airport transfers run from $70 each way. Full day trips outside the valley such as Guatapé start around $320. Armored vehicles and protection trained drivers are quoted separately.

The rates in plain numbers

These are the figures we quote, not teasers. Prices move with vehicle class, group size and season, but this is the honest range.

  • Airport transfer, MDE to El Poblado or Laureles: from $70 each way, fixed regardless of traffic.
  • Executive SUV with chauffeur, ten hour day: from $220 including fuel and tolls.
  • Full day outside the valley, Guatapé or Santa Fe de Antioquia: from $320.
  • Nightlife standby, evening into the early hours: quoted by hours held, typically from $180.
  • Van or Sprinter for larger groups: from $320 a day depending on size.
  • Armored vehicle with protection trained chauffeur: quoted per assignment after a short brief.
  • Weekly bookings: lower per day, usually the best value for stays of five nights or more.

What a day rate includes

Fuel, tolls, parking, commercial insurance, the vehicle and the chauffeur's time, including waiting between your commitments. The waiting is the point of the booking, not an extra.

Water, phone charging and a clean late model vehicle are baseline, not perks. If a quote is unclear about fuel or tolls, that is a warning sign rather than a bargain.

What costs extra, and when

Everything below is agreed in advance and in writing, never applied afterwards.

  • Hours beyond the booked ten, billed hourly at a rate you see before you agree to it.
  • Trips outside Antioquia, which involve the driver's overnight accommodation.
  • Vehicle upgrades, from executive SUV to armored or to a larger van.
  • Additional vehicles for groups moving separately.
  • Child seats are free but need to be requested when you book.

Why the cheap quotes are cheap

You will find drivers offering a day for half these numbers. Some are fine. Many are running personal vehicles without commercial insurance, without background checks, and without anyone to call if something goes wrong at midnight.

The difference shows up on the one day it matters. Ask about insurance and vetting before you compare prices, because otherwise you are comparing two different products.

How to get an accurate quote quickly

Send dates, group size, where you are staying and roughly what the days involve. That is enough for a fixed price within the hour.

We would rather tell you that three transfers cover your trip than sell you a week of standby you will not use. Clients who start small tend to add days once they see how the city moves.

Quick answers

How much does a private driver cost per day in Medellín?

From about $220 for a ten hour day with an executive SUV, including fuel, tolls, insurance and the driver's time. Weekly bookings cost less per day, and larger vehicles or armored options are priced separately.

How much is a taxi or transfer from Medellín airport to El Poblado?

A pre booked private transfer runs from $70 each way at a fixed price. Street taxis are typically cheaper on paper but negotiated, unmetered for foreigners and the most common source of overcharging.

Is fuel included in a private driver rate in Medellín?

With a proper operator, yes, along with tolls, parking and commercial insurance. If a quote excludes fuel, treat the headline price as incomplete.

How much does a day trip to Guatapé with a driver cost?

From around $320 for a full day, covering the round trip, waiting time at the rock and the lake, fuel and tolls. It is roughly two hours each way from the city.

Do I pay extra if we run late?

Only for hours beyond the booked day, at an hourly rate agreed before the booking starts. Nothing is added after the fact.

What does an armored vehicle cost in Medellín?

It is quoted per assignment rather than by a list price, because it depends on the vehicle class, the driver's training level and the itinerary. A short brief about the trip is enough for a firm number.
